Something a little mean.
Mar. 22nd, 2005 04:36 pmOk. I was thinking about the story in health class we heard about how this one girl became anorexic.
Basically, she used to be fat. And this popular jock guy played this joke on her, asking her to go out with him or sumthing like that and then rejecting her.
So, she gets hurt, and doesn't want to eat anymore.
She then gets really skinny. Now that she's skinny, the same guy felt bad for being mean to her, and invited her to a party that he and his friends were hosting. Afterwards she has some tragic health failure and is now trying hard to recover in some center some where.
OK: Our primary reaction would be to judge the jerk who hurt her in the first place. Yes, indeed, no doubt, what a jerk, because he thinks fat people are inferior.
HOWEVER: How is she any better? I mean, the whole reason she got hurt is because she got her hopes up. Why did she get her hopes up, because she thought a date with the hot jock guy would be swell. Why? Cause she never liked fat people in the first place.
THEREFORE: She kinda brought it onto herself.
THEREFORE2: Stupidity and messed up ideals cause suffering.
THEREFORE3: get your priorities STRAIGHT people!!!
How this ties in with me:
A friend of mine who admired my originality and "morality" asked me a question. He asked me whether I was a person who did things because it was right, or because I did it to best further my society. (He used specific terms, but I can't remember what they were).
I answered: I dunno, I guess I do things for myself.
He replies with laughter: That's egotism.
We laugh it off.
But seriously, now that i think of it, as bad as it sounds, I am an egotist. I do things to prevent suffering upon myself, which often happens to benefit those around me, and/or happen to be regarded as the "right" thing to do. But I fear the wrath of my conscience, I fear death, I fear seclusion, I am motivated by fear. This is why I avoid being stupid, this is why I seem moral, because as seen in the top example, stupidity or messed up priorities can lead to suffering.
