"Actually, the idea of lightsabers have been around for a long time before starwars. Basically, the the idea of using a giant plasma cutter (super hot welding and cutting tool for metals) as a weapon.
As Ekental was saying. they would not block each other, because they are actually just jetting out super hot air.
However, the plasma model of a lightsaber can make some parts of starwars make more sense. It is possible that such a large amount of plasma can create very large charge. (i believe it is..negative? don't remember, but there is a charge) Other lightsabers (plasma swords under my model) and lasers (plasma slugs) would also have the same type of charge. So, these similar charges may just oppose each other enough to repel the plasma pulses to significant extents. Hence why the lightsabers like to bounce off each other.
If this model works, it would also explain the terrible aim of the stormtroopers and all others who aim at jedis. It's not because they are bad shot, but because their shot's directions are skewed because of the wild swinging of supercharged lightsabers. Whereas the straight shots would require direct contact/opposition to be repeled into negative velocity, away from the original target."
